Iran's parliament speaker urges ceasing co-op with UN

TEHRAN, Jan. 15 (Xinhuanet) -- Iran's Majlis (parliament) Speaker Gholam-Ali Haddad-e Adel here Sunday urged the government to cease cooperation with the UN nuclear watchdog if the country's nuclear dossier was referred to the UN Security Council.

"The government is duty-bound to put an end to its voluntary cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the implementation of the additional protocol in case Iran's nuclear file is referred," Adel was quoted by the official IRNAnews agency as saying.

The Majlis last November approved a law which requires the government to cease all voluntary confidence-building measures if the country's nuclear case were referred to the UN Security Council.

Adel reiterated that Iran "has voluntarily agreed to implement the additional protocol of the Non-Proliferation Treaty", which allows the UN inspectors to carry out snap inspections.

The speaker also expressed Iran's intention to continue talks with the European Union (EU) to break the current standoff, but ruled out any preconditions for the negotiations.

"We are interested in continuing negotiations which will help clarify all aspects of the case...We are not interested in talks, the precondition of which deprives us of the rights on peaceful use of nuclear energy," Adel said.

Iran on Tuesday removed seals on the research facilities at three nuclear sites and resumed the fuel research work suspended for more than two years under the supervision of the IAEA, incurring condemnation of the European Union, the United Statesand some other countries.

In response, the EU trio of Britain, France and Germany on Thursday said that the nuclear talks with Iran had reach a dead-end, calling for an emergency session of the IAEA to vote on referring Iran's nuclear issue to the UN Security Council.

Iranian Foreign Minister Manuchehr Mottaki said on Friday that Iran would stop cooperation according to the law of last November if the nuclear file was referred.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Saturday also vowed not to give up nuclear research even if the file was turned over to the UN Security Council, but dodged a question on stopping cooperation at his press conference.

The United States accuses Iran of developing nuclear weapons secretly, a charge rejected by Iran as politically motivated. Enditem
