Singapore holds 1st anti-terror excercise

SINGAPORE, Jan. 15 (Xinhuanet) -- Singapore on Sunday held an anti-terror exercise in one of the country's hawker centers to test the Singaporeans' response to terror attacks.

According to Channel NewsAsia reports, the drill, organized by the Serangoon Constituency Civil Defense Executive Committee, took place at the Chomp Chomp Hawker Center in Serangoon Garden in the southeast part of the country.

Codenamed "Exercise NorthStar V", the city state's first surprise large-scale civil emergency drill drew the participation of more than 2,000 people from 22 government agencies and even disrupted the public train services during the process.

During the two-hour mock terror attack, which started at 11 a.m. local time, a simulated car bomb, followed by another nearby blast occurred outside the center. Police and rescue workers rushed to the scene and swung into action.

Over 100 trained grassroots volunteers also participated in the exercise.

The terror attack exercise came after a big civil emergency exercise was held in Singapore on Jan. 8.

Singapore has said that it will hold more anti-terror exercises during peak hours as it can't assume that terrorists would choose off-peak times to attack.

In recent years, Singapore has been believed to be a possible terror attack target. To deal with such a threat, Singapore has taken a series of measures, including terror attack exercises. Enditem
