TEHRAN, Jan. 14 (Xinhuanet) -- Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said here Saturday that the demand of stopping Iranian nuclear research runs contradictory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty and the UN nuclear watchdog conventions.

"Our position is very clear: we are carrying out nuclear activities according to the NPT and the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) regulations. Asking us to stop nuclear research is beyond such conventions," Ahmadinejad told reporters at a press conference.

"Nuclear research is our natural right, and we suspended it voluntarily. Now, we will resume them," Ahmadinejad stressed. Ahmadinejad further said that the western countries should disarm themselves at first if they really want to secure peace and security of the world.

"Some western countries who are equipped nuclear weapons are skeptical about Iran's intentions of peaceful nuclear program, but they found nothing to prove their doubts even by the harshest inspections," he said.

The president, meanwhile, reiterated that Iran had no intentions to pursue nuclear weapons, saying the Iranians are a civilized people seeking peaceful solution to any problems.

Iran on Tuesday removed seals on its nuclear research sites and resumed fuel research activities under the supervision of the IAEA,incurring condemnation of the European Union, the United States and some other countries.

The United States accuses Iran of developing nuclear weapons secretly, a charge rejected by Iran as politically motivated.Enditem
