At least 10 Yemenis killed in hajj stampede
www.chinaview.cn 2006-01-14 13:38:52

SANAA, Jan. 13 (Xinhuanet) -- At least 10 Yemenis were trampled to death and 56 others wounded during a stoning ritual near the holy Saudi city of Mecca on Thursday, the Ministry of Waqf (Religious Endowments) and Guidance announced on Friday.

Four women were among the dead and the toll could rise further since many bodies have not been identified, officials said.

Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh has instructed the embassy in Saudi Arabia and Waqf officials to take quick measures to rescue the injured nationals and look for the missing in Saudi hospitals.

Some 200,000 Yemenis travel to neighboring Saudi Arabia to perform the hajj every year.

Thursday's stampede, which occurred when pilgrims were rushing to hurl pebbles at three pillars symbolizing Satan in Mina outside Mecca, was the deadliest since 1990.

The Saudi Interior Ministry announced Friday that the death toll from the tragedy has risen to 363 and the bodies of 203, including 118 men and 85 women, have been identified. Enditem
