UN may consider sanctions against Iran: Britain
www.chinaview.cn 2006-01-13 19:07:21

LONDON, Jan. 13 (Xinhuanet) -- British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw said Friday the United Nations may consider imposing sanctions on Iran if the country failed to comply with demands over its nuclear program.

The UN Security Council would consider sanctions, but may look at other measures first, Straw told BBC Radio.

He said there had been plenty of examples where the UN imposed obligations on a member state without resorting to sanctions.

He also said he had never discussed the possibility of military action against Iran with anyone in the U.S. administration.

"No one is talking about invading Iran or taking military action against Iran," Straw added.

Straw urged the international community to take a diplomatic approach to ending the nuclear standoff with Iran.

The foreign ministers of France, German, Britain held a meeting in Berlin Thursday, saying they would refer Iran to the Security Council for possible sanctions.

The meeting was held in response to Iran's resumption of nuclear research.

Iran responded on Friday by saying that it would end voluntary cooperation with the UN over its nuclear work if it was referred to the Security Council. Enditem
