JAKARTA, Jan. 12 (Xinhuanet) -- A total of 64,755 survivors of last year's tsunami are currently still living in emergency tents in refugee camps throughout Aceh Province, a local official said Thursday.
"It has been over one year since the deadly tsunami hit Aceh, and yet these people are still living as refugees staying in tents or being accommodated by their relatives," Antara news agency quoted Aceh Administration Secretary M. Kamil Yunus as saying.
"Reconstruction of permanent houses has been very slow due to bureaucratic procedures, such as on provision of land certificates, thereby tens of thousands of tents are still standing across the region," Kamil said in Banda Aceh, capital of Aceh province.
The target of house construction would unlikely be achieved due to problems on certifications and unclear land borders, the Head of the Aceh Rural and Housing Services Chairani said earlier.
Citing an example, he said, in Pungo Jurong village, Banda Aceh, the local authorities set a target of constructing 204 units of houses, but only seven units had been built so far.
For the year 2005, Aceh set a target of building 30,000 houses for the tsunami victims. A total of 130,000 houses are expected to be constructed by 2007. Enditem
