HAVANA, Jan. 10 (Xinhuanet) -- The United Nations peacekeeping force will try
its utmost to ensure stability in Haiti, the interim commander-in-chief of the
UN troops said on Monday.
At a gathering commemorating the previous commander who died on Saturday,
interim commander-in-chief of the UN troops Eduardo Aldunate promised that the
UN peacekeepers would do their best to stabilize Haiti for a presidential
election scheduled to take place on Feb. 7, after four postponements.
Aldunate pledged to continue to accomplish the mission to ensure that peace
and security reach "every corner of this country."
Brazilian Lt. Gen. Urano Bacellar, 57, who had commanded the 9,000 UN
forces in Haiti since the end of August, was found dead from a gunshot wound in
his hotel room in Port-au-Prince. Brazilian authorities launched an
investigation into the cause of his death.
Violence and kidnappings for ransom cast a shadow ahead of the election,
while UN troops stepped up actions to restore order in Port-au-Prince over the
weekend. Enditem |
