LONDON, Jan. 7 (Xinhuanet) -- Britain closed its embassy in Jordanon Saturday due to fears about the security situation there, British Foreign Office said.

"Terrorists may be in the final stages of planning attacks against Westerners and places frequented by Westerners," the Foreign Office said in a statement, adding "the British Embassy in Amman will be closed until further notice due to the security situation."

The Foreign Office also advised in the statement that those planning to travel to Jordan "should take sensible precautions for your personal security arrangements throughout your visits."

"Developments in the region could affect the security situation. You should check the FCO website regularly for updated advice." said the statement.

According to the statement, there have been a number of successful and attempted terrorist attacks in Jordan since 2001. On 9 November 2005, three suicide bombers killed 60 people and injured almost 100 in hotels in Amman, and there were no British casualties amongst these. Enditem
