Australia expresses concern over Sharon's health

CANBERRA, Jan. 6 (Xinhuanet) -- The Australian government on Friday expressed concern and sympathy on health of Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, saying Sharon played a pivotal role in the Middle East peace process.

Sharon, 77, is in a critical but stable condition after undergoing a surgery in Jerusalem Thursday following a massive stroke.

"I would like to express my sincere concern and deep sympathy over the illness of Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon," Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said in a statement issued here Friday.

He said Sharon had played a pivotal role in the Middle East peace process and is widely respected around the world.

"His courage in pushing ahead with disengagement from Gaza and parts of the West Bank has been particularly noteworthy and a very difficult decision for someone closely connected with the Jewish settlements," the minister said, adding, "Australia hopes that allparties to the Middle East peace process continue the work of Mr Sharon to bring the roadmap for the Middle East peace process to fruition."

Australian Acting Prime Minister Mark Vaile expressed hope for a full and speedy recovery of Sharon. "The Australian government remains strongly committed to peace and stability in the Middle East ... and urges all sides to reaffirm their commitment to peace," he said in a statement. Enditem
