Russia urges national unity in Iraq
www.chinaview.cn 2006-01-06 04:53:57

MOSCOW, Jan. 5 (Xinhuanet) -- Russia called on political and religious forces in Iraq to unite in improving the security situation of the country on Thursday after two suicide bomb attacks killed more than 100 people in two Iraqi cities.

The situation in Iraq is not changing for the better but continues to cause grave concerns, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement. "Not a single day passes without reports of bomb explosions or armed attacks in Baghdad or other Iraqi cities," it said.

"We strongly call on all the political and religious forces in Iraq to reach national consensus for the sake of Iraq's future," the statement said, adding the task to achieve unity is particularly important in light of the recent election and the ongoing process of forming a new government in the war-ravaged country.

Iraq experienced the bloodiest day on Thursday since the general elections last month.

Some 50 were killed and at least 85 wounded in a suspected suicide bomb blast in Iraq's Shiite holy city of Karbala, some 110km south of Baghdad.

Shortly afterwards, nearly 70 people were killed and more than 100 wounded when a suicide bomber blew himself up outside a police recruitment center in the western Iraqi town of Ramadi, 110 km west of Baghdad. Enditem
