BAGHDAD, Jan. 5 (Xinhuanet) -- The death toll rose to 50, with dozens others wounded, in the suspected suicide bomb blast in Iraq's Shiite holy city of Karbala, some 110 km south of Baghdad, said local TV report on Thursday.
It was yet to be confirmed that the blast was caused by a suicide bomber or a roadside bomb, according to the al-Iraqiya channel, which was broadcasting live from the scene near a Shiite shrine in the city.
The powerful blast took place among crowd of Shiite Muslim visitors and street vendors in the narrow area between the holy Shiite shrines of Imam Abbas and Imam Hussein.
Earlier, a police source said the blast was caused by a suicide bomber who blew himself up in the busy area, putting the casualties on at least 10 people killed and 20 wounded.
Ambulances rushed to the scene to evacuate the wounded and the dead bodies.
On Wednesday, at least three people were wounded when a car bomb exploded in the Shiite holy city of Karbala. But the target of the attack was unclear, according to the police. Enditem |
