GAZA, Jan. 4 (Xinhuanet) -- Militants of al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, an armed wing of the ruling Fatah movement, blocked on Wednesday a main road leading to Rafah crossing on the border with Egypt, Palestinian security sources and witnesses said.

The militants also detonated a bomb under the Gaza-Egypt border fence, but causing no damage, the witnesses said.

They said the militants wanted to press the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) to release their fellow militant who was arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of being responsible for kidnapping a British aid worker and her parents last week.

An interior ministry spokesman confirmed that Eyad al-Hams was detained by Palestinian security forces in Rafah for involvement in kidnapping Kate Burton and her parents last Wednesday.

The three were set free after three days of captivity. The kidnappers said the kidnapping was aimed at urging the international community to press Israel to stop military operations in the Palestinian territories.

Meanwhile, militants from the same group stormed the central election committee office in Rafah in protest against al-Hams' arrest, Palestinian security sources said.

The latest internal dispute came against a backdrop of upcoming Palestinian parliamentary elections set on Jan. 25, during which Fatah, led by Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas, will face a tough challenge from Hamas, an Islamic group with surging street popularity. Enditem
