Protest in India against French old warship broken up
www.chinaview.cn 2006-01-04 08:34:51

BEIJING, Jan.4 -- A Greenpeace protest against the arrival of the retired French aircraft carrier, Clemenceau, in India was broken up by security guards outside the French embassy in New Delhi on Tuesday.

The retired aircraft carrier is to be sold for scrap in India.

Greenpeace alleged that the old warship still contained hundreds of tons of toxic substances including 500 tons of asbestos.

Ramapati Kumar,a Greenpeace campaigner, said "...they are illegally dumping the 'Clemenceau' on India which is full of hazardous and toxic material. This is an arrogant approach on the part of the France."

The ship set sail from France on Saturday, bound for the ship breaking yard in the western state of Gujarat.

Security guards posted at the embassy snatched banners from the protestors. Later, the protestors were taken away by the police.
