JAKARTA, Jan. 3 (Xinhuanet) -- The final batch of non-organic police withdrawal
from Indonesia's province of Aceh was delayed to later this week, due
to transport problem, an Indonesian representatives in Aceh Monitoring Mission
told Xinhua Tuesday.
The last pulling out 2,220 non-organic policemen would make the total of
7,000 out of the province, and mark the completion of relocation in Aceh
province.
"They are on port now, ready for embarkation. The problem is only
transport, they leave possibly on Dec. 4 (Wednesday)," Indonesian representative
in AMM Bambang Dharmono told through telephone from the province.
Last Thursday, over 5,600 non-organic soldiers left the province, making
the total of 24,000 non-organic troops, dispatched to the province since 2002,
are excluded from Aceh province, Aceh Military Command Maj. General Supaidin Adi
Saputra told Xinhua in telephone.
According to the commitment to the peace deal on August 15 in Helsinky,
Finland the relocation must be completed before Dec. 31 in 2005.
The next withdrawal would make Indonesia complete the relocation of entire
non-organic soldiers and police from Aceh province.
All the non-organic personnel had been stationed to the province since
2002, immediately after the government imposed a martial law on Aceh province,
following the failure of peace process in Tokyo Japan in April 2002. The status
of Aceh was back to normal in May last year.
Over 14,700 organic soldiers and 9,100 organic policemen would remain in
the province according to the officers.
The separatist Free Aceh Movement already surrendered 840 weapons to the
Aceh Monitoring Mission (AMM) by the end of last year.
The GAM has waged a guerrilla war since 1976, accusing Jakarta of exploiting the impoverished province's rich resources. More than 12,000 people, mostly civilians, have been killed since then. Enditem |
