BELGRADE, Jan. 2 (Xinhuanet) -- Serbia said on Monday that its gas import has been halved to only 5 million cubic meters a day, due to the gas row between Russia and Ukraine.

    Hungary's company MOL has halved its gas deliveries to Serbia, but this would have no immediate effect on consumers, Serbian Gas Company's spokesman Aleksandar Kostadinovic told the official Tanjug news agency.

    Russia's Gazprom cut off supplies to Ukraine on Sunday after last-ditch talks fail to settle a price dispute, affecting also gas supplies to Central and Western European countries. Russia's gas is supplied to major part of those countries, including Hungary through which Serbia is supplied.

    Kostadinovic said that reduced gas supplies would not affect citizens, but that it would certainly have a negative impact on the industry.

    He warned that regular gas delivery from reserves could last another 48 hours, and if the reduction continues, gas would be delivered only to priority consumers such as citizens, hospitals, schools and food industry. Enditem
