TIKRIT, Iraq, Jan. 1 (Xinhuanet) -- Two suicide car bombs struck a U.S. and Iraqi forces north of Baghdad on Sunday, killing an Iraqi soldier and wounding 24 others, including civilians, a source from Iraqi-U.S. liaison office in Tikrit told Xinhua.

   "A suicide car bomber drove his explosive-laden vehicle into a U.S. military convoy on the main road between the town of Baiji, 200 km north of Baghdad, and Tikrit, 170 km north of Baghdad, and detonated his vehicle," the source said on condition of anonymity.

   The attack badly charred a U.S. Humvee, killing and wounding the soldiers aboard, he said.

   The blast took place near a fuel station where many Iraqi civilian cars were queuing, wounding 16 people and damaging several cars, said the source.

   Another suicide bomber rushed his explosive-packed minibus into an Iraqi army base on the main road between Samarra, 120 km north of Baghdad, and Balad, 80 km north of the capital, killing a soldier and wounding two others, the source said.

   In a separate attack, six soldiers from an Iraqi force guarding an oil installation were wounded when a roadside bomb hit their vehicle in Ishaqi area, some 100 km north of Baghdad, he added.

   Earlier in the day, the Iraqi police said that Iraqis in Baghdad have received the new year with eight car bomb blasts across the capital, leaving two civilians dead and several others wounded. Enditem
