GAZA, Jan. 1 (Xinhuanet) -- A group of Palestinian militants on Sunday assaulted a club for United Nations workers in Gaza City, Palestinian officials said.

Five masked gunmen broke into the UN club, one of the few places where alcohol is served and only foreigners are allowed inside, at round 2 a.m. local time (0000 GMT).

They tied up a security guard before placing explosives that damaged a bar of the seaside building, the officials said, adding that no one was hurt in the attack.

The Gaza Strip has seen increasing violence in the run-up to the Jan. 25 parliamentary elections. Enditem
