Heavy snow hits Poland, causing traffic chaos

WARSAW, Dec. 31 (Xinhuanet) -- Heavy snowfall overnight in Poland snarled traffic Saturday as 23 people have been frozen to death in icy temperatures in recent days, police said.

The blizzards that swept across southern and central Poland blocked roads in Katowice and Bielsko-Biala area in the south, and blanketed the Baltic coastal city of Gdansk, causing traffic jams and blocking city streets.

A major thoroughfare linking Warsaw and Gdansk was also covered by snow.

Police appealed to drivers to stay put as forecasts said temperatures would drop below zero Saturday across Poland and heavy snow would slam the northern regions of the country. Enditem
