BANDA ACEH, Dec. 27 (Xinhuanet) -- The Free Aceh Movement (GAM) on Tuesday officially declared the disbandment of its military wing to show "compliance to the Helsinki Peace Accord" signed with the Indonesian government on Aug. 15.

"We are deeply committed to implementing the truce and upholding all its principles. The Aceh Military now becomes part of the civilian society to support peace, stability and harmony inAceh," GAM spokesman Sofyan Dawod told a press conference in the Aceh capital of Banda Aceh.

He said GAM has established the Committee for Aceh Transition to implement the Helsinki truce.

The GAM military wing is estimated to have 3,000 personnel.

GAM was established in 1976 and has since waged rebellion in a bid to split from the Indonesian government rule.

In the wake of the violent tsunami in 2004, the government resumed peace talks with GAM which culminated in the signing of the peace accord, under which the Indonesian military and police must withdraw all non-organic forces from Aceh and GAM must disarmitself. Enditem
