COLOMBO, Dec. 21 (Xinhuanet) -- Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse here
Wednesday held talks with the main political party of the minority Tamils on his
plans to revive the peace negotiations with the Tamil Tigers, said the
president's office.
The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) MPs during their talks with the president stressed the need
to stop what they called the harassment of civilians by the army in Jaffna.
They drew the attention of Rajapakse to the incidents which led to 15
civilians being injured in clashes with the Army, TNA legislator Nadaraja
Raviraj said.
Rajapakse assured the TNA legislators that he would have a fresh approach
toward the stalled peace negotiations with a view to provide fresh solutions to
the long drawn out separatist armed conflict.
Just hours after Rajapakse's talks with the legislators of the TNA yet
another soldier was killed in the northern Jaffna peninsula by suspected
Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebels.
This was the second such killing of a soldier in the last 24 hours.
Three grenades were thrown at an army vehicle at 6:10 p.m. (1210 GMT) local
time in Kachai in Jaffna, said defense officials, adding that five more
including an officer were injured in addition to the dead soldier.
This was the fourth separate attack on the security forces during
Wednesday, officials added. Enditem |
