Beijing, Dec. 21 (Xinhuanet)-- Two passenger trains collided at a station south of Rome, Italy on Tuesday, killing at least one person and injuring more than 50, the fire brigade said.
A train traveling from Rome to Cassino stopped at the station in Roccasecca, about 80 miles south of the capital, said Luigi Irdi, a Trenitalia spokesman. Another train, headed from Rome to Campobasso on the same track, slammed into the first train from behind at 3:20 p.m., he said.
Police said 12 of the injured were in serious condition.
"One person is dead and another is missing," a fireman was quoted as saying by Reuters. A police source said the two were probably the drivers of one of the trains.
An unknown number of people had been trapped under the twisted metal of the wreckage, but all were freed by Tuesday night, officials said.
Italian Transport Minister Pietro Lunardi ordered a probe into the accident, a statement said.
That accident set off a row over safety standards, with railway workers complaining that the Italian railways had neglected secondary lines while investing in main routes.
It was the second train crash in Europe in two days. On Monday, a commuter train collided with an oncoming passenger train in southern Poland, injuring at least seven people. Enditem
