STOCKHOLM, Dec. 19 (Xinhuanet) -- Sweden is freezing 5 million dollars in aid to Uganda, because it is dissatisfied with democratic development in the country, Radio Sweden reported on Monday.
In a press release Sunday, Foreign Aid Minister Carin Joemtin said the decision does not, however, leave the citizens of Uganda to their fate.
Some 3 million dollars will still be used to fund the humanitarian work of United Nations agencies in northern Uganda, where a 19-year insurgency has seen more than 1.6 million people made homeless.
Joemtin said that after next year's elections in Uganda, Sweden will make a new assessment of democratic development there.
Sweden is the fifth country, after Britain, Norway, Ireland and the Netherlands, to withdraw aid from Uganda. Enditem |
