BAGHDAD, Dec. 19 (Xinhuanet) -- Partial results in 89 percent of ballot boxes in Baghdad polls elections showed that about 58 percent of votes go to the Shiite-backed United Iraqi Alliance (UIA).
Iraq's electoral commission said the Shiite UIA garnered 1,403,901 votes, and the Sunni Iraqi Consensus Front followed by 451, 782 votes, Adel al-Lami, head of the commission told a news conference.
The Iraqi National List of the former prime minister Ayad Allawi came third with 327,174 votes, added Lami.
Lami also announced the partial results of nine other Iraqi provinces, mostly Kurdish and Shiite ones, which clearly showed the domination of the UIA and the Kurdish bloc.
He did not give the results of eight other Iraqi provinces, including the Sunni Arab dominated ones.
Baghdad, the biggest electoral district in Iraq with 2,161 candidates contesting on 59 seats in the coming parliament's 275 seats, is a mixed Shiite and Sunni populated city. Enditem |
