BAGHDAD, Dec. 18 (Xinhuanet) -- US Vice President Dick Cheney visited Iraq on Sunday.

The unannounced visit by Cheney was made three days after the war-ravaged country wrapped up an election designed to choose its first full-term parliament since Saddam Hussein was toppled by the US-led forces in 2003.

During his day-long tour, Cheney met with Iraqi Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari and top US military commanders in Iraq.

Hailing the election as a great success, Cheney said it will help enhance self-governing, bridge sectarian gaps and improve security for the country.

This is Cheney's first trip to Iraq since the US-led war began in March 2003. Enditem
