LISBON, Dec. 14 (Xinhuanet) -- The Portuguese government said a revised
2007-2013 European Union (EU) budget, proposed by the British government, is
better than previous ideas, but it is still "minimalist and not enough," local
media reported on Wednesday.
Portuguese Prime Minister Jose Socrates met with his British counterpart
Tony Blair on Wednesday and the negotiations between the two "are bearing
fruits" but do not appear to be enough for the objectives and ambitions of the
EU, the sources said.
Elsewhere, Lech Kaczynski, new prime minister of Poland, said at a press
conference on Wednesday that Poland would veto the latest budget proposal
because it offered "a spoonful of solidarity... and a barrel of national
egoism."
Other Polish officials said the budget was not doing enough for the least
developed European nations.
The new proposed budget adds 2.3 billion euros (2.6 billion U.S. dollars)
to the previous one presented on Dec. 5. This is a comparatively modest increase
to the 849.3 billion euros (977 billion dollars) budget.
Portugal's share of the new budget has not yet been made clear, but
Portugal would have more flexibility on how to use the funds.
Portuguese newspapers said the new budget would allow an additional 160
million euros (184 million dollars) to be spent on rural areas.
