Israel reopens Gaza crossings after one-week closure

GAZA, Dec. 12 (Xinhuanet) -- Israel on Monday opened the crossings on the eastern and northern borders of the Gaza Strip after a one-week closure, Palestinian security sources said.

Israel decided to open Erez Crossing and Karni commercial passage to Palestinian workers and goods flow, the sources said.

Israel imposed a full closure on Gaza and the West Bank following a suicide bombing attack last Monday in Netanya, Israel, which killed five Israelis.

The Islamic Jihad, a militant group sworn to Israel's death, claimed responsibility for the attack.

The week of closure also witnessed a spiralling tit-for-tat violence, during which four militants, two fishermen and a Palestinian teenager were killed by Israeli army and an Israeli soldier was stabbed to death by a Palestinian near Ramallah.

The security sources said Israel's easing of measures came following US pressure to ease the hardship besetting Palestinians' daily life. Enditem
