Related: Iraq to tighten security amid parliamentary elections
BAGHDAD, Dec. 11 (Xinhuanet) -- A coalition government could be formed after Iraq's upcoming parliamentary elections as no party is expected to win an outright majority, Iraqi President Jalal Talabani said on Sunday.
"These elections will be decisive and different from the last ones. The
Sunnis will vote," Talabani said.
Therefore, he added, the formation of a majority bloc would be unlikely in
Thursday's polls.
And "there will be some important bloc that will be obliged to form
coalitions or a consensus of sorts to form a government," he said.
He also said strong participation by the Sunni Arabs would "remove any pretext
from the insurgents" who say they are fighting an illegitimate
government.
Iraqis go to the polls on Thursday to choose a 275-member parliament which
will elect a new government.
To in a bid to ensure security during the elections, the Iraqi government has
announced strict security measures including curfew and the closure of
borders and airports.
The daily curfew will run from 10:00 p.m. (1900 GMT) until 6:00a.m. (0300 GMT)
during the period of Dec. 13-17, an Interior Ministry official told
reporters. Enditem |
