| Heavy smoke caused by explosions at a fuel depot soars into the sky over Hemel Hempstead to the northwest of London Dec. 11, 2005. (Xinhua) | LONDON, Dec. 11 (Xinhuanet) -- Huge explosions at a
fuel depot rocked north of London early Sunday morning, local police said.
A police spokeswoman confirmed there were two or
three explosions in the vicinity of the Buncefield fuel storage in Hertfordshire
at around 6:00 am (0600 GMT).
Petrol and fuel oils for a large part of southeast
England are traded through the Buncefield fuel spot.
A section of a major motorway nearby was closed in
both directions right after the explosion.
According to a BBC report, several people were killed
in the explosions but details were not immediately available.
Local media said the explosions were powerful enough
to be heard as far as west and south of London.
Some witnesses reported the accident to local
newspapers and television stations, saying they heard "massive" sound of
explosion and saw orange flames soaring into the sky near the towns of Hemel
Hempstead and Saint Albans.
One witness told BBC that lots of houses were damaged
at Saint Albans, 40 km north of the British capital, and another one called the
Sky News television, saying windows of a hotel near the town were smashed by the
