CAIRO, Dec. 11 (Xinhuanet) -- Egypt's ruling National Democratic Party
(NDP) has won some 72 percent of the 432 parliamentary seats decided after the
month-long legislative elections, according to revised results released
Saturday.
The NDP won 311 seats, accounting for some 72 percent of the
total seats decided, said Minister of Justice Mahmoud Abul Leil, who is also
chairman of the electoral commission.
He said 112 seats went to
independent candidates, including 88 seats to the banned but usually tolerated
Muslim Brotherhood.
Secular opposition parties performed rather poorly
in the polls and snatched nine seats, of which six to the Wafd party, two to the
Tagammu party and one to the Ghad party, according to the latest
results.
Abul Leil put the official turnout in the elections at 26.2
percent.
The elections ended on Wednesday.
The elections,
which kicked off on Nov. 9, were phased over three stages to make sure that
there are enough judges and Justice Ministry officials to monitor the polling
process in each stage.
The polls are meant to decide 444 seats of the
454-member People's Assembly and the remaining 10 seats are appointed by the
president.
The 12 undecided seats will be competed later because courts
canceled election results in six constituencies due to violence or controversy.
