RAMALLAH, Dec. 10 (Xinhuanet) -- Chief Palestinian Negotiator Saeb Erekat Saturday said that the statements made by Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) political leader-in-exile Khaled Mesha'al on Friday violated the national consensus.
In an interview with the Voice of Palestine radio, Erekat described Mesha'al's statements, which called for ending truce with Israel, as violating the Cairo agreement, saying "there's a Palestinian national consensus agreed in Cairo on the calmness."
Mesha'al, who is in the Syrian capital Damascus, told a rally that the truce period that the Palestinians had in the past is enough and there is no room for truce.
He also called on the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) to end the truce with Israel, saying "I say to our brothers in the Authority that we are witnessing political stagnation," therefore,"we will not enter a new truce and our people are preparing for a new round of conflict."
Responding to Mesha'al's statements, Erekat said that all Palestinian sides have to know that the reached calmness is a high national consensus and no Palestinian faction has the right to decide by itself.
"There is only one political authority," Erekat stressed.
Meanwhile, Hamas leader in the Gaza Strip Saed Syam told reporters that Hamas has no intentions to end the calmness now, adding "Hamas is still committed to the reached calmness."
However, Hamas has not yet officially contacted the PNA to assure it of the group's commitment to the calmness, according to Erekat. Enditem |
