British police could face charges over shooting of Brazilian

LONDON, Dec. 10 (Xinhuanet) -- British police officers involved in the shooting of a Brazilian on a London underground station could face charges, independent police investigators revealed on Friday.

Nick Hardwick, chairman of the Independent Police Complaints Commission, said it is "highly likely" that officers involved may face criminal charges, Sky news reported.

He revealed that 30 people witnessed the shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes, a 27-year-old electrician who was mistakenly killed on the train at a tube station in south London by anti-terror police who took him for a suicide bombing suspect one day after the abortive bombings on July 21 and two weeks after the first attacks when 52 innocent people were killed and some 700 injured.

Investigation into the incident has not been completed but Hardwick said he will probably send a file to the Crown Prosecution Service suggesting that charges could be brought.

However, the Commission would not detail the nature of the alleged offences which the Crown Prosecution Service could potentially have to consider, although it is believed they could include offences as serious as murder or manslaughter.

Hardwick also noted that Ian Blair, Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, whom de Menezes' family has appealed for his resignation, is not among those who have been interviewed as part of the probe. Enditem
