BEIJING, Dec. 9 -- Israeli officials have condemned comments from Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. He said the Israel should be moved to Europe, so the West can make amends for the Holocaust.

Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom called the statement a wake-up call. while officials say the remarks reflect the thinking of the Arab world.

Ahmedinejad was speaking Thursday at an Islamic summit in Mecca. He suggested that European countries backed the founding of Israel in 1948 out of guilt over the Nazi Holocaust.

Other recent remarks from Ahmadinejad, that Israel should be wiped off the map and that Israel's belief that Tehran's nuclear activities are aimed at producing nuclear warheads, have only inflamed tension between the two sides.
