Chirac asks Britain to make new EU budget proposals

PARIS, Dec. 6 (Xinhuanet) -- French President Jacques Chirac called Tuesday British Prime Minister Tony Blair over the next European summit to be held on Dec. 15 and 16 in Brussels, asking Britain to make new proposals on EU's 2007-2013 budget.

Chirac said that "the current proposals made by the British presidency (of the EU) are a problem," his spokesman Jerome Bonnafont quoted him as saying.

Chirac hoped "the presidency could make new proposals that would above all ensure that Britain plays its full part in financing an enlarged Europe -- and not just till 2013 but over the long term," Bonnafont said.

Britain has estimated the overall EU budget for 2007-2013 would be cut by 846.75 billion euros, or 1.03 percent of the European Union's gross domestic product (GDP).

Britain would abandon eight billion euros over seven years of the annual budget rebate it gets from the 25-member bloc, but mostof the savings would come from a seven to eight percent cut in planned funds for new member states.

Chirac said the proposals "would lead France to agree to the same financial sacrifices" as under earlier ideas rejected in June, according to Bonnafont. Enditem
