MOSCOW, Dec. 4 (Xinhuanet) -- It was groundless for the European Council's parliament to say the Azerbaijani ruling party preventedthe opposition from deserved victory in some electoral districts in the November elections, an official with the country's presidential office said Sunday.
Fuad Ahundov, director of the office's
social-political department, told reporters in Baku, capital of Azerbaijan, that
the outcomes in the November parliamentary elections truly showed the political
map in the country, the Interfax news agency said.
It was reported that the European Council's
parliament was contemplating the suspension of the Azerbaijani parliament's seat
in it, citing frauds in the elections.
However, Ahundov said opinion polls in recent years,
conducted by domestic and foreign authoritative organizations, revealed that the
opposition parties' influence among citizens lagged far behind the ruling New
Azerbaijan party.
The elections generally accorded with the democratic
principle, and the results fitted the outcomes of opinion polls, he added.
In the Nov. 6 elections, the ruling party gained 63
seats in the 125-member legislature, while the opposition got only 10 seats.
The opposition has all along rejected the results of
the elections, which they said were rigged, and held several big rallies last
month to demand a re-run. Enditem |
