JERUSALEM, Dec. 4 (Xinhuanet) -- Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon on Sunday praised his new Kadima ally Shimon Peres, saying the veteran statesman will play a key role in peacemaking with the Palestinians if Kadima wins the general elections set for March.

    "I asked Shimon Peres to pick any job he wants," Sharon, flanked by Peres, told reporters. "Shimon can fulfill any post, I believe with great success. Regardless of the job Shimon picks, it is crystal clear he will be a full and central partner in the diplomatic process."

    For his part, Peres said he was forging a "grand partnership" with Sharon that would pursue Middle East peace and regional economic opportunities. "I see an opportunity that we must not miss," Peres said.

    Sharon reaffirmed his support for the roadmap peace plan, which charts reciprocal steps toward the creation of a Palestinian state alongside a secure Israel.

    He expressed hope that the Palestinian National Authority will follow the roadmap.

    Peres announced his departure from the Labor Party last week,after he lost the leadership race to Amir Peretz, who immediately made good on his pledge to take the Labor out of the government, sparking early elections.

    The former Labor leader then threw his support behind Sharon,saying he is confident that Sharon will seek peace with the Palestinians.

    Peretz was not an "appropriate candidate for prime minister,"Peres said. Enditem
