GAZA, Dec. 4 (Xinhuanet) -- Palestinian police chief on Sunday appealed for assistance in rebuilding and training security forces in order to impose law and order in the Palestinian territories.

"We are really in a bad need of great financial support in order to build our police and security forces and we of course need more and more training course for our police officers," Major General Alla Husni told a two-day conference in Gaza. Husni said that his forces needed more weapons and bette requipment if they were to successfully combat a tide of lawlessness in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

"We only have limited weapons, light weapons...Only one in 20 policemen even have weapons," he added.

He said the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) should build four central prisons and new headquarters and installations forthe security and police forces.

"The success in imposing law, order and discipline in the Palestinian territories is necessary for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state," Husni said.

He said that 4,500 Palestinian police officers had received training at home or abroad.

"We also need to set up our own police academies in Gaza and the West Bank like any other country in the world," he said. Husni noted that the Israeli army had carried out ground andair strikes targeting many Palestinian police and security buildings in the past five years.

PNA minister of interior General Nasser Yousef also attended the conference.  Enditem
