Belgium detains 14 over links to suicide bomber

BRUSSELS, Nov. 30 (Xinhuanet) -- Belgian police on Wednesday raided homes and detained 14 people suspected to have links with a Belgian suicide bomber in Iraq, local press reported.

A Belgian woman, whose name was not identified, carried out a suicide attack in Baghdad earlier this month, said Belgian prosecutors, adding that this woman had converted to Islam after marrying a radical Muslim.

The Belgian woman is believed to be the first female European bomber. Her husband is reported to have been killed in Iraq in a separate incident.

Among the detainees, nine of them are Belgian, three are Moroccan and two are Tunisian. Authorities said they wanted to break a network sending volunteers to Iraq.

The De Standaard newspaper said the woman's Belgian passport was found on her body after the attack on a US military convoy on Nov. 9. She is reported to be the only victim of the attack.

Belgian authorities have also had to deal with other cases of Belgian-based Islamic extremism. Thirteen men are currently on trial accused of membership of a militant group that has been linked to bombings in Madrid and Casablanca. Enditem
