Spain to halt flights carrying secret US prisoners
www.chinaview.cn 2005-12-01 10:59:46

MADRID, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- Spain said on Wednesday it would take actions to stop any flights carrying clandestine prisoners ofthe United States from making a stopover in Spain.

Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero told the Congress that authorities would take a "vigilant attitude" towards suspicious aircraft.

If it is confirmed that planes making an irregular transfer of prisoners are making a stopover in Spain, the country would coordinate a response alongside the rest of the European Union (EU), he said.

According to Spanish media reports, the US Central IntelligenceAgency has several Islamic prisoners locked up in secret jails across Europe. The US maintains a military base at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba for enemy prisoners it calls "illegal combatants."

The Council of Europe, the 25-nation EU's main human rights body, is investigating reports about the illegal transfer of 31 prisoners, accused of terrorism by the United States. Enditem
