www.chinaview.cn 2005-11-30 23:03:20

NANCHANG, Nov. 30 (Xinhuanet) -- Encountering hundreds of aftershocks, the disaster relief work is proceeding tensely in the city of Jiujiang, east China's Jiangxi Province on Wednesday.

Though five days have passed since the city was jolted by an earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale, rescuers and local residents are still feeling frequent and strong aftershocks.

As of 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, the eleven seismographs installed by the China Seismological Bureau recorded 586 aftershocks of the earthquake with the most powerful measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale.

Yet the disaster relief work has not been delayed by the tremors.

Nearly 500 architects are carefully examining the structures of all kinds of buildings in the city, while experts from the China Seismological Bureau have finished their building safety authentification within an area of 124,200 square meters.

They have found that 53 buildings in the city fail to meet national safety standards.

Meanwhile, all primary and middle schools resumed class on Wednesday.

All the schools gave lessons concerning earthquake knowledge and survival skills to students.

A disaster relief team headed by Vice Minister of Civil Affairs Jia Zhibang arrived in Jiujiang on Wednesday.

Jia said the Ministry of Civil Affairs has collected 12,050 tents from Wuhan and Tianjian and will soon arrive at the quake-hit areas.

The provincial government said that as of Wednesday the power and water supplies returned to normal in the quake-hit areas.

The red-cross association and charity organizations in Jiujiang have received more than 13.6 million yuan (about 1.6 million US dollars) as well as a large amount of materials for disaster relief. Enditem
