Germany urges US answer on reported CIA flights
www.chinaview.cn 2005-11-29 05:51:42

PARIS, Nov. 28 (Xinhuanet) -- German Defense Minister Franz Josef Jung said Monday here Germany was waiting for Washington's clarification on the reported CIA prisoner flights in Europe and worried to know if the possible "acts of torture" did happen.

"The question to find out is whether there were acts of torture" on these flights ... That's the point that worries us, legitimately I think. I hope that all this can be explained away," said Jung who is on a visit to Paris.

Germany and other EU countries are demanding the US government provide "clarifications" after reports that the CIA flew suspected Islamic extremists to secret prisons in Europe.

The Council of Europe's parliamentary assembly had already announced a probe into reports of the CIA operating clandestine prisons in some European countries.

A number of other European countries have opened inquiries into alleged CIA plane landings, including Finland, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain and Sweden.

According to EU Justice Commissioner Franco Frattini, EU had made contact several days ago with the White House about possible secret CIA activities in Europe, but Washington had "unfortunately not yet given any formal assurance" that the reports were untrue. Enditem
