BEIJING, Nov. 28 (Xinhuanet) -- The body of polluted water in northeast China's Songhua River has entered Bayan County, Heilongjiang Province, Monday morning after passing through Harbin, said an environmental bulletin.
The density of nitrobenzene amounted to 0.1994mg/L at zero hour Monday at Bayangang Township of Bayan County, 10.73 times above safety standard. It peaked at 4:00 a.m. Monday, according to the bulletin of the State Environmental Protection Administration.
Bayangang is 142.8 kilometers downstream of the Sujiatun section near Harbin, a city of more than 3 million residents, which stopped drawing water from the Songhua River for four days starting Wednesday.
Experts calculated that around 50 tons of pollutants containing benzene passed through Harbin, says the bulletin.
Chinese environmental experts estimated around 100 tons of pollutants containing benzene flowed into the Songhua River when an upstream chemical plant suffered an explosion on Nov. 13. They said some of them would deposit or be absorbed on the way.
Harbin resumed water supply from 6:00 p.m. Sunday after the density of nitrobenzene and that of benzene had met safety standards. Enditem |
