65 trapped on gondola at ski resort in Canada

OTTAWA, Nov. 27 (Xinhuanet) -- About 65 people are trapped on a gondola at a ski resort in Canada's western Alberta Province and crews are racing to rescue, local media reported Sunday.

The people are stuck in several gondola cabins on Lake Louise ski resort's longest lift, the 2,918-meter Grizzly Express, as it rises 736 meters from the resort's base to a mountain top.

Operations manager Rick Werner said a safety switch on the gondola malfunctioned and stranded the people in mid-air.

Eight ski patrol crews began helping people out of the gondola cabins two hours later. An estimated two hours is needed to get all people down safely.

    No injuries were immediately reported.

Temperatures had dipped to minus 6 degrees Celsius on some parts of the mountain by early evening, as forecasters predicted alow of minus 10 degrees and light snow flurries overnight. Enditem
