LONDON, Nov. 27 (Xinhuanet) -- British aid worker Norman Kember has been kidnapped in Iraq with three other Westerners, the British Foreign Office said on Sunday.

Professor Kember was snatched in Baghdad on Saturday along with two Canadians and an American. He is believed to be in his 70s and was said to be representing a number of humanitarian aid groups.

"We can confirm his name but we cannot give any more details at this stage," the Foreign Office was quoted by the BBC as saying.

"We will be in touch with the Iraqi authorities, and with other countries involved, the Americans and the Canadians. We will be setting in motion an urgent investigation."

Kember's wife Pat, who lives in Pinner, north London, said her husband used to be secretary of a peace group in Pinner but no longer represents the group. "He is representing a number of different organizations," she was quoted as saying.

The Canadian government identified two of the workers as Canadians. The fourth kidnapped worker was reported to be American. It was not immediately clear which relief organization the four were working for.

It is the first snatching of foreign civilians in Baghdad sincethe kidnapping of guardian reporter Rory Carroll, who was held for 36 hours last month and later released unharmed.

More than 220 foreigners have been kidnapped in Iraq following the war and nearly 40 of them were killed. Enditem
