(Xinhua/Reuters) | Snow fell on most parts of the British Isles. The hardest hit areas were
Devon and Cornwall in southwest England, where 12.7 centimeters of snow has
fallen, reminding people of an earlier warning by the Met Office that Europe
could expect a harsher winter.
Up to 25 centimeters of snow fell in some parts of Britain, and forecasters
predicted that snow was heading for London soon.
Paris and other French cities also got the first snow of the season, where
three people have died of the freezing cold. The French authorities raised the
weather alert on Friday in the country's 31 departments, and asked for
"increased vigilance" in Paris.
Snowfalls also hit Germany, the Netherlands, Austria and other European
countries, bringing down temperatures, causing traffic jams and forcing road
closures and flight cancellations. Enditem
