Terrorists shift attacks to backpack bombs: Indonesia
www.chinaview.cn 2005-11-25 18:19:05

JAKARTA, Nov. 25 (Xinhuanet) -- Terror attacks in Indonesia have shifted from expensive car bombs to small, undetectable bombs stuffed into travelers' backpacks, National Police Chief Sutanto said Friday.

Master bomb maker Azahari Husin, who was killed in a shootout earlier this month, avoid using car bomb in his latest attacks because it would cost him much money and take at least three weeks for preparation, the police chief told a press conference here.

Azahari-led group is accused of carrying out the restaurant bombings on Bali island on Oct. 1 that killed 23 people and injured more than 150 others.

The attacks were carried out by three suicide bombers recruited by Malaysia-born Azahari and his compatriot Noordin Moh Top, who remains at large so far.

In contrast to the Oct. 1 attacks, the same group used car bombs in the October 2002 Bali bombings, the August 2003 Marriott Hotel bombing and the September 2004 Australian embassy bombing.

The militant group must rent a house that has a garage to prepare car bomb, increasing possibility of early detection by security officers, said Sutanto.

Meanwhile, "backpack bombs can be assembled anywhere, including at the targeted location," he added. Enditem
