The Swiss company, Ringier, will employ Schroeder to work as a political consultant and lobbyist with his office in the Swiss city of Zurich.

Schroeder will work for the company one or two days a week and his title will be "personal adviser to Michael Ringier on international politics issues," Marco Castellaneta, spokesman for Ringier told the German news agency DPA.

"Schroeder is undoubtedly one of the great statesman of the present time," said Michael Ringier, who owns the company.

"I am convinced that Gerhard Schroeder will be an excellent advisor to me and to the firm on the right path to take," he said.

"And he will surely also open this or that door for us as well," he added.

For more than 170 years, Ringier has been providing informationand entertainment. Ringier's Blick is the largest-circulation daily newspaper in Switzerland.

Ringier also owns more than 40 publications in Eastern Europe and is also the largest publishing house in Switzerland.

Ringier Print Holding AG, a 100 percent subsidiary of Ringier AG, is a general contractor active in the manufacture of printed communications materials.

Schroeder, 61, transferred his power to his predecessor Angela Merkel on Nov. 22. He has also resigned from the Bundestag or the parliament. Enditem
