BAGHDAD, Nov. 24 (Xinhuanet) -- Death toll has risen to 30 in a car bombing attack south of Baghdad on Thursday, a police source told Xinhua.

"So far 30 were killed and 23 others injured," the source said.

"An explosive-laden car parking near a hospital blew up in the town of Mahoumdiyah, 30 km south of Baghdad," said the source, "The car bomb was targeting a US military patrol. Two US military vehicles were damaged, but we don't know how many American casualties were caused because the US forces cordoned off the area and prohibited anyone from approaching," the source added.

Earlier, the source said at least 19 Iraqis were killed and dozens injured.

Insurgents frequently target US and Iraqi forces with car bombs and roadside bombs in a bid to topple the US-backed Shiite- and Kurdish-dominated Iraqi government formed in April. Enditem
