EU sees no health risk from contaminated Nestle baby milk
www.chinaview.cn 2005-11-23 21:43:27

BRUSSELS, Nov. 23 (Xinhuanet) -- The contaminated baby milk recalled by Swiss food giant Nestle from four European markets poses no risk to public health, a European Commission spokesman said on Wednesday.

EU's Food Safety Agency had determined that the chemical substance isopropyl thioxanthone (ITX) should not pose a toxic threat in the levels detected, spokesman Philip Tod told a news briefing

"The presence of ITX in food could be considered undesirable. However, it is unlikely to present an immediate health risk at the levels reported," he said.

Nestle announced on Tuesday that it had recalled more than 2 million liters of baby milk found to be contaminated with ITX from Italy, Spain, France and Portugal.

Most of the milk is in Italy, where about 30 million liters were seized after tests showed some of it had been tainted by ITX from printing ink on the packaging. Enditem
