Talabani to visit Iran soon: report
www.chinaview.cn 2005-11-21 03:47:42

TEHRAN, Nov. 20 (Xinhuanet) -- Iraqi President Jalal Talabani is set to arrive in the Iranian capital Tehran on Monday for a three-day visit, Iran's semi-official Mehr news agency reported on Sunday.

Talabani's decision to visit Iran has come at an invitation by Iranian President Mahmud Ahmadinejad, the report said.

The Iraqi president is scheduled to meet with Iranian Supreme Leader Seyyed Ali Khamenei, President Ahmadinejad and Supreme National Security Council Secretary Ali Larijani, and the talks will focus on the implementation of a series of agreements recently signed by the two neighboring countries, the report added.

The Iranian government has not yet confirmed Talabani's visit. Talabani is currently in the Egyptian capital of Cairo for a preparatory meeting for an Iraqi reconciliation conference.

Iran and Iraq fought a lengthy war from 1980 to 1988, during which altogether more than 500,000 people were killed.

The downfall of former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein paved the way to the normalization of relations between the two once hostile neighbors.

Iraqi Prime Minister Ibrahim Jaafari paid a landmark official visit to Iran in mid-July, opening a new chapter in bilateral relations.

Since then, the two countries have signed several agreements to boost cooperation in economy, defense and security.

Iraqi National Security Advisor Mowaffaq al-Rubaie just wrapped up a three-day official visit to Iran on Saturday.  Enditem
