GAZA, Nov. 20 (Xinhuanet) -- The Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) said on Sunday that it rejects any attempt to postpone the Palestinian legislative elections due on Jan. 25.
Mahmoud Zahar, a prominent Hamas leader in Gaza, said Hamas received information that there are instructions to the Central Elections Committee to prepare for possible postponement of the parliamentary elections and the movement rejects any delay.
Earlier reports said Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas ordered the Palestinian elections committee to see if there is a possibility that the Jan. 25 elections will be postponed.
"Abbas is intending to postpone the elections due on Jan. 25 for several weeks due to disputes over the elections system," the Israeli Ha'aretz quoted a senior Palestinian official on Sunday as saying.
The Palestinian Legislative Council approved two election systems, the proportional and the constituent systems, splitting the decisive power 50 to 50 in the elections.
However, Palestinian National Authority intended to present a new Palestinian elections law based on the proportional systemonly, which was rejected by Hamas.
Zahar told reporters that a new law needs much re-preparation work for many issues, saying the parliamentary elections scheduled on Jan. 25 will definitely be affected if any change is made in the current elections law. Enditem
